Montañita town is located in “La Ruta del Sol” (the route of the sun) to 2 hours away from Guayaquil and 10 minutes of Ayangue.
Montañita is at the moment the paradise of the foreign visitors by the facilities that give to all type of travellers, thus that you have a tourist or backpacker budget (Hotel rooms from $7 to $50 dollars).

Its name have pre-incaic origins and means “lagoon of the Gods”. The cuicocha lagoon is located 14 km away from Otavalo, on the Cotacahi volcano to a height of 3060 meters, within the Cotacachi-Cayapas reserve.
It is a volcanic crater of 4 km in length by 3 km wide and 200 meters. of depth, in the middle of this lake they excel three volcanic rock domes that conform two islands covered with vegetation and separated by the “channel of the dreams”,: Yerovi, the smallest and Teodoro Wolf. Its access is prohibited.
This volcano still shows signs of activity, which are distinguished in the boat trip that can take in the port, also there is a place to rest and to eat. Around this lagoon a footpath for long walks exists and the entrance to Cotacachi volcano.

Laguna de Cuicocha
Su nombre es de origen preincaico y quiere decir “laguna de los dioses”. La laguna de cuicocha se encuentra ubicada a 14 Km. por carretera desde Otavalo, al pie del volcán Cotacahi a una altura de 3060 metros, ubicada dentro de la reserva Cotacachi-Cayapas.
Es un cráter volcánico de 4 Km. de largo por 3 Km. de ancho y 200 metros. de profundidad, en medio de este lago sobresalen tres domos de roca volcánica que conforman dos islas cubiertos de vegetación y separados por el “canal de los ensueños”,: Yerovi, la más pequeña y Teodoro Wolf la más grande. Su acceso es prohibido en ambas.
Este volcán muestra aun signos de actividad, que se distinguen en el recorrido en lancha que se puede tomar en el puerto, donde también hay un lugar para descansar y comer algo. Alrededor de esta laguna existe un sendero para caminatas y la entrada al volcán Cotacachi.
